About Karabakh Horses

The Karabakh horse (Azerbaijani: Qarabağ atı) is an ancient mountain-steppe racing and riding horse. It is one of the oldest breeds in the world, originating from the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.

These horses are known for their metallic golden-chestnut coat, compact body, and extraordinary stamina. They were historically prized by Persian shahs and Russian tsars alike.

Today, the Karabakh horse is considered a national symbol of Azerbaijan and efforts are underway to preserve and revive the breed, which had become critically endangered.
